Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke to celebrate his win with longtime friend, Niche Media's Jason Binn at a Los Angeles Confidential Magazine celebration, Monday, January 12, 2009
Los Angeles Confidential Magazine Cover Star Mickey Rourke Tells The Mag: “I’m Just Grateful For A Second Chance”
Los Angeles, CA – January 11, 2009 – Golden Globe award winner for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, Mickey Rourke, will celebrate his win with longtime friend, Niche Media’s Jason Binn at a Los Angeles Confidential Magazine celebration, Monday, January 12, 2009.
Rourke, who graces the cover of Los Angeles Confidential Magazine’s “Awards Issue,” on stands now, opens up about his Hollywood comeback and the role that got him there in The Wrestler: “After being out of work 13, 14 years I’m just grateful to have a second chance.”
Rourke who clinched the Best Actor award for playing the past-his-prime pro wrestler Randy “The Ram” Robinson in Darren Aronofsky’s drama, admits in the magazine that the role wasn’t easily handed to him. He reveals, “[Darren] had been working on this project for, like, a decade. He told me it was going to be a struggle to make it with me, raising the finances on my name, because I hadn’t been in circulation for awhile, and he really went to bat for me.”
On tackling the emotional side of his character Rourke reveals, “I think my whole fear was putting myself back in that headspace emotionally, to revisit some very dark, painful moments, places and people. That was as hard as the physical stuff.”
Rourke also offers advice to the new generation of Hollywood actors --“I would say – being out of work 13, 14 years like I did – not to walk that road. I put four or five years into studying like a monk and being the best actor I could, then I self destructed. It took me 10 years in therapy to change my ways,” he admits. “They’re going to find out the hard way that maybe you can get away with that s—t when you’re in your twenties, but when Hollywood closes the door on [them], there’s not many guys who can be out of work 13 or 14 years that they’re going to give a second chance to.”

Strolling around Niche's nook with Jason Binn

I was in the neighborhood (and a nice neighborhood it is — 20th and Park Ave South), so I thought I’d pay my friends at Niche Media a visit. They own two floors at 257 Park Ave South, but are moving soon to Tribeca.
As you may know, Niche is moving pretty fast these days. As always, there have been lots of parties, but there have also been launches (Trump — read more here), acquisitions, partnerships, and, of course, plans for the move. All this activity shows in the office, which is bustling, bursting at the seams, and busy (weak ending, I know, but I was going for the alliterative trifecta).
Binn gave me a personal tour in which he stopped multiple times to talk with editors, designers, sales people, and VP/publishing directors of Gotham Mag, Christina Greeven Cuomo. Niche is Binn’s little empire, and he’s incredibly involved in the business, as it should be.
The great thing about magazine media is that our products are manifestations of our personalities. Sure, the editor may have more to say than anyone, but everyone is in on the conversation. I have lots more to say on this subject. I’ll save it for a later post.
Ps - As I said, the office at Niche is bursting at the seams. That company must be growing incredibly fast: They cannot fit one more person in that space…and they have two floors! It’s good to see that print based businesses can still grow.

NEW YORK -- Niche Media CEO Jason Binn has named Cristina Cuomo Editorial Director of the company's New York-based publications, Gotham and Hamptons magazines. She will also work on the recently acquired Philadelphia Style, as well as Michigan Avenue in Chicago, launching in September.
As Editorial Director, Cuomo will be responsible for overseeing the editorial pages and securing and managing the magazine's high-profile contributors and covers. She will also be tasked with generating content that focuses on New York and Hamptons-based personalities, establishments and the best that the city has to offer in the worlds of fashion, beauty, interior design, real estate, business, entertainment, culture and dining.
"Cristina's innovative ideas, creativity and passion for the lifestyle we report on are a great asset to us," said Binn. "She perfectly exemplifies the Niche reader and we are thrilled to have her on the editorial side."
Cristina joined forces with Jason Binn in 2001 as the Vice-Chairman of Niche Media. In that position, Cuomo worked closely with marketing, event promotions, advertising, and editorial, ensuring proper branding for the Niche Media model in each respective market. Prior to her arrival, she founded and ran the lifestyle magazine, Manhattan File, as Publisher and Editor-in-Chief for seven years, as well as its offshoots, Hamptons File and Vegas File. She was also editor of Hamptons for three years prior to founding Manhattan File.
She is a graduate of Cornell University and is married to ABC's "Good Morning America" News Anchor, Christopher Cuomo, son of New York's three-term Governor, Mario Cuomo. The Cuomos live on the Upper West Side of New York with their two children, Bella and Mario. She is an avid supporter of Turnaround for Children, the New York Public Library, The New York Botanical Gardens, HELP and Mentoring USA, among other charities.
